Stradbally Hall
The Cosby Family
The Cosby Family was granted their estate in Stradbally during Tudor times. They have remained in Stradbally since the Laois & Offaly Plantation. Stradbally Hall as it appears today, dates from the middle of the 19th century. It was built to replace the 1772 residence. The present building was built farther back into the estate away from the town. We do not know the reason for this.

Our visit to Stradbally Hall
Today all of fifth and sixth class went on a history trip. First we went to Abbeyleix heritage house. When we first got in we entered a room with loads of carpets they were made in Abbeyleix. The man also showed us how they made the carpets. After that we went into another room. This room had tools from the Stone Age. There was a piece of wood four hundred years old and you can tell it was chopped with a skinny axe because if you looked closely you could see where the person put little holes in it.
When we finished in Abbeyleix we went to Stradbally Hall. When we first went in we went into this big room with an old snooker table and a big picture on the wall. Mr. Cosby, the owner of the house, was talking about how his ancestors got the house and the land during the Laois Plantation. After that we went into the dining room. He had a really big table. When we all looked around and went into the next room this room was where the ladies would sit after dinner. The walls were decorated with paintings of landscapes and portraits of family members. Mr. Cosby told us all about the people in his family who had fought in many wars. The last room was the library where Mr. Cosby showed us some very old maps dating back to the plantation. We all loved the house and I would love to go back again.
